At the time the Library was built (at the creation of Neldorin, for the histories to be ever recorded) so were the Labrynths. The Library Master created them himself. It provided him a refuge and a home. He spent most of his years, away from people, rarely venturing out into the actual library, prefering to keep watch from afar. Even rarer was when he went out into the world even if he did assist in the creation.
It consists of many passages, the most notable leading down to the deepest part containing his study.
